Well I guess that's better than an association that prefers to remain alcoholic.

them and their wholly affirming claims?
It hasn't been absent from me.

And if I understand correctly, such also hasn't been absent from Philip. So the reconciliation or synthesis of a real experience that stemmed from an interaction with the Bible can be troublesome when the cracks and flaws of the Bible itself are finally understood. The most common human reaction to resolve the dilemma is to blindly dismiss the cracks and flaws as non-existent or irrelevant. And we're back to the OP.

Why? Don't you think those are the moments when they need God's love the most? Yet your God does not do this (or at least you've just said so). Imagine a parent who refuses comfort in times of great need because their child had shaken their fist at him. Not a good parent, wouldn't you think?

Huh? You really think that was the motivation? Have you never considered the RCC had major power over the nations of Europe and did not want to lose that power? Why do you think they did what they did for centuries? And if you have to go all the way to the middle ages to find an example of your fear, I can offer certain consulation. If it has not happened in so long, it would be happening soon. The Protestants didn't convey any such thing.

Imagine a parent trying to comfort their child who is striking them in the face with their fist instead of crying on their shoulder. Do you get the picture as to why comfort is impossible to receive? Atheists need God's love and comfort as well but they will not. Remember the words of Jesus....how I longed to comfort you as a mother hen gathers her chicks but YOU WOULD NOT. Love means you let someone remain in their chosen state. The alternative is tyranny, not love.
