Default Christian Taliban not far away

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - The Alabama Senate has voted to allow a church to form its own police force.

Lawmakers on Tuesday voted 24-4 to allow Briarwood Presbyterian Church in Birmingham to establish a law enforcement department.

The church says it needs its own police officers to keep its school as well as its more than 4,000 person congregation safe.

Critics of the bill argue that a police department that reports to church officials could be used to cover up crimes.

The state has given a few private universities the authority to have a police force, but never a church or non-school entity.

Police experts have said such a police department would be unprecedented in the U.S.

A similar bill is also scheduled to be debated in the House on Tuesday.

    a) thinly sourced story....why not link to a copy of the bill?
    b) Google search showed almost the exact same AP story posted over and over.....biased me thinks....

But again...if you don't live in Alabama, why should you care?

Well you don't live in Syria but you feel fine commenting on things going on there.

    a) Don't think I commented on the Syria thread...but perhaps I have
    b) your response didn't answer my question: "why should you care?"

"Citizen's arrest" enables any citizen (security guard) to act as a police officer in a lot of circumstances. The point is mute really. It isn't like the church is judging and sentencing. They can only detain until the proper authorities get there. It is crazy when you think about the fact that they wasted revenue to get a right to do something they already had the right to do.

Comparing this to the Taliban is...intellectually dishonest at best.

    Although this:

Critics of the bill argue that a police department that reports to church officials could be used to cover up crimes.
Is true. But, what, as if this isn't true if you replace 'church' with 'government'?

Hence communism (socialism) is bad and decentralization of power is good.

    I rest my case =)

The real Taliban are in fact religious police who act as police, judge, jury, and punisher. As long as they only enforce the civil laws it might turn out OK. But to do that correctly, they need the training of a real police officer.

Citizen's arrest had better be exactly according to the civil law otherwise there is liability. That is why training is so important. Security guards don't generally arrest people they hold them until the real police come. They also don't generally go around carrying guns either.
