I don't know if you've read any of my posts regarding the historical personage of Oliver Cromwell 17th century England. He was a Puritan a sincere Bible believing person who genuinely wanted to make England into a new garden of Eden. When England's king Charles I claimed the divine right of kings Cromwell rebelled and sought to instill Christianity in its purest form throughout the land, he had the best of intentions, he followed the letter what he thought Christianity was supposed to be and do. He even refused the throne and instead claimed the title "Lord Protector" instead of king. Yet within 5 years became a military dictator and made England into a heap of misery. Neighbors were spying on their neighbors virtually anything that was fun became outlawed all in the name of Christianity as understood by their Lord protector.
